The Iowa River

Why the Iowa River?

The Iowa River was selected for American Rivers’ “Most Endangered Rivers List” because it is one of Iowa’s most beautiful rivers, and is an important resource for the communities located along its banks.  But the river is facing a number of water pollution problems that must be fixed or we risk losing many of the benefits the river provides to us. These problems include high bacteria levels and declining fresh water mussel populations.

The Iowa River is extensively used for recreation including fishing, boating and canoeing.  The Iowa River is also a source of drinking water in the Iowa City area and is home to a diverse range of aquatic life including fish, freshwater mussels, and aquatic insects.
