What needs to be done?
  • Adopt antidegradation rules to prevent new pollution - We must not delay any longer in adopting an important provision of the federal Clean Water Act that will prevent new pollution from being discharged to the river.  The Iowa River is a valuable resource. While we work to improve the quality of the water in the impaired sections of the river we must protect areas of the river that are not impaired from getting worse.
  • Prevent manure spills and fish kills – Especially in the upper part of the river in Hardin, Hamilton and Wright Counties we must evaluate the impact that large numbers of livestock facilities have on the water quality of the Iowa River and its tributary streams.  We must stop new pollution in these areas that are already impaired by manure pollution.
  • Enforce the law and prevent illegal sewage discharges to the river –We must work with small communities to help them find the technical and financial resource to fix failing sewage treatment facilities that are fouling the Iowa River and many tributary streams.  We can no longer tolerate this dangerous situation and we must make this a top priority. Human health is at risk.
