Summer Internship Available

The Iowa Environmental Council is seeking an intern who will primarily work on a project involving rural outreach to Iowa communities with threatened water. They will be responsible for working with the Communications Director to create collateral that can be distributed to local communities, work with rural media to publish editorials and paid advertisements in response to issues and build relationships with grasstops leaders.

This internship offers an excellent opportunity to learn about Iowa environmental issues, gain outreach and organizing experience. Upon successful completion, interns will receive a certificate of internship, invaluable contacts within the environmental community, credit for school work based on individual program requirements, and a fun, instructive experience with a non-profit environmental

organization.

Essential Functions 

  • Activate IEC members in Iowa’s communities with threatened water
  • Assist with social media and digital content on a regular basis
  • Build relationships with new members and organizations in rural Iowa
  • Compose communication pieces for local distribution 

Qualifications

Required

  • Two years of collegiate study completed in relevant field
  • Commitment to the goals of environmental quality and sustainability
  • Strong analytical and written and verbal communication skills
  • Expertise in social media management
  • Self-starting, results-oriented dedication; ability to work under pressure on deadline
  • Ability to work in dynamic team environment
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours
  • Valid driver’s license and own transportation

Desired

  • Experience working in nonprofit settings with mission-driven staff and board
  • Exposure to public policy development and advocacy
  • Grassroots organizing experience
  • Experience managing and recruiting volunteers

Details

  • Summer 2017, beginning and ending dates negotiable 
  • This is an unpaid internship 
  • 15-25 hours/week, flexible schedule
  • Some weekend work and travel required
