Sustainable Rancher, Author to Headline Iowa Environmental Council Conference

Des Moines – Nicolette Hahn Niman, livestock rancher, attorney and author will headline the Iowa Environmental Council’s 2017 annual conference on the theme, Act Iowa: Local Solutions for a Healthier Environment. The event will be held Thursday, October 5, at the FFA Enrichment Center in Ankeny.Nicolette

Hahn Niman authored the books Defending Beef:  The Case for Sustainable Meat Production (2014) and Righteous Porkchop:  Finding a Life and Good Food Beyond Factory Farms (2009), as well as numerous essays for the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times. She is a popular speaker and was one of just 23 presenters from around the world at the Nobel Week Dialogue 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden. Her articles have appeared in many publications, including The Atlantic, The San Francisco Chronicle and The Earth Island Journal. 

Previously, Hahn Niman was Senior Attorney for the environmental organization Waterkeeper, where she focused on issues related to agriculture and food production, and as an environmental lawyer for National Wildlife Federation. She served two terms on the City Commission for Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Today, she lives in Northern California with her two sons, and her husband, Bill Niman, founder of the natural meat companies Niman Ranch and BN Ranch, acquired by Blue Apron in 2017.

Hahn Niman will be joined at the Iowa Environmental Council 2017 Conference by over a dozen dynamic speakers hailing from across Iowa and the Midwest, who will delve into local solutions for a healthier environment. Speakers will be featured in panels addressing local foods, sustainable housing, watersheds, energy and more.
