MidAmerican Energy recently released a news statement claiming to have served Iowans with 100% renewable energy in 2022. The news release did not mention the six coal plants that MidAmerican Energy owns and operates in Iowa. IEC and Clean Up MidAm partners shed light on the reality of MidAm's clean energy generation.

Newly published MidAmerican studies reveal costly inconsistencies in clean energy transition

In response to an IUB order, MidAmerican Energy filed new public versions of two internal studies that show solar is the lowest cost path for achieving carbon free energy and acknowledge that transitioning away from burning coal is an essential piece of achieving this goal. These studies come to light as a hearing for the approval or denial of MidAmerican's $3.9 billion Wind PRIME project gets underway at the IUB.

Proposed rail merger in Iowa may bring significant environmental impacts

A proposed $31 billion marriage between Canadian Pacific Railway Limited and Kansas City Southern is currently before the Surface Transportation Board (STB). IEC and groups call on MidAmerican to add money-saving solar, storage to Wind PRIME

MidAmerican's Wind PRIME proposal asks customers to foot the bill for two systems: wind and coal. In testimony recently filed with the IUB, IEC and other groups are calling on MidAmerican to increase solar and storage to allow MidAmerican to retire its five Iowa coal plants, invest in additional renewable resources, and build a less risky and more affordable grid that is better for Iowans' health and pocketbooks.

Waterloo adopts ambitious 24/7 carbon-free electricity goal

The Waterloo City Council voted unanimously Monday to adopt a goal of reaching community-wide carbon-free electricity by the year 2035. With the resolution's passage, Waterloo joins Des Moines as the second city in Iowa to commit to 24/7 carbon-free electricity, and the fourth nationwide.

"Clean Up MidAm" Campaign Holds MidAmerican Energy Accountable

A coalition of organizations and concerned Iowans have launched the “Clean Up MidAm” campaign to hold MidAmerican Energy accountable, asking for a public plan to close its Iowa coal plants by 2030. While MidAmerican Energy advertises a 100% renewable energy vision, it runs one of the largest coal fleets in the country, and is the single largest carbon polluter in Iowa.
