Position Summary
The Iowa Environmental Council (IEC) seeks to hire two 1L or 2L law students for summer 2022. The Law Clerks will assist IEC in conducting legal research, drafting documents, and supporting litigation or other advocacy efforts. The work will support IEC’s efforts on climate, environmental justice, clean water, and clean energy.
Position Details
The Law Clerk will conduct research and draft memoranda related to water quality laws, Iowa Utilities Board proceedings, environmental justice, new legislation, and other environmental issues that arise. The Law Clerk will attend meetings with IEC staff and partner organizations, and will observe hearings of the Environmental Protection Commission and Iowa Utilities Board.
The Law Clerk will be expected to work remotely, but the opportunity for in-person attendance and meeting participation may be possible depending on pandemic conditions.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Research legal issues identified by supervising attorney.
2. Write memoranda providing legal analysis and summarizing findings within specified deadlines.
3. Provide support for IEC’s advocacy efforts, including document review, contact with state agencies, and other advocacy needs, as appropriate.
4. Work with IEC attorneys to support IEC’s legal needs, including analysis of potential cases, research and development of legal strategies, litigation, and general legal advice.
5. Attend state agency meetings and hearings as appropriate and participate in IEC meetings.
Qualifications and desirable qualities
Must have completed at least one year of law school (open to 1Ls and 2Ls)
Excellent analytical and writing skills
Commitment to and enthusiasm for protecting Iowa’s environment
This is a paid, full-time (40 hour/week) position to be completed in ten weeks. Start and end dates are flexible.
