Dr Brian CampbellIEC’s work is always changing, and the same can be said for the individuals who make up the IEC staff. After two and a half years with the organization, Dr. Brian Campbell is moving on from his role as Executive Director with Iowa Environmental Council.

Says Katie Cownie, President of IEC’s Board of Directors, “We appreciate Brian’s work at IEC. He took over leadership at the beginning of 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, and led IEC through a time of growth and change that has had a positive impact on the organization. We are proud of IEC’s accomplishments during this time.”

Those included launching new projects in strategic areas, including ambitious local climate goals, federal climate and infrastructure funding, corporate accountability, environmental justice outreach, growing our network of donors and supporters, and securing transformative new grants.

“This has been a rewarding role for me. I am proud of all we were able to accomplish, and I leave enriched by the wide circle of friends who are part of IEC and our coalition. It was a privilege to work on these important issues together,” shared Brian. “Your dedication gives me hope as we continue to face momentous environmental challenges here in Iowa and globally. Thanks to all who have offered your partnership and support to IEC these last few years, and for your ongoing commitment. I wish the best to IEC in the future.”

As IEC begins the process of seeking Brian’s replacement, rest assured the organization is well positioned to address the environmental issues affecting our state through our core work and new areas of engagement. Michael Schmidt, IEC's staff attorney, will step into the role of interm executive director, a role he held during the organization’s last executive director search and hire.

Throughout it all, we remain focused on finding and implementing solutions to create a just, healthy environment and a sustainable future for all Iowans. Please join us in wishing Brian the best as he moves ahead!
