IEC welcomes renowned climate advocate Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson to keynote Bright Ideas event

DES MOINES – Clean energy supporters across the state will gather virtually on Wednesday, October 7 to recognize Iowa’s clean energy leadership and discuss the future of clean energy and climate during the Iowa Environmental Council’s annual Bright Ideas event.

Dr. Ayana Elizabeth JohnsonThe council is proud to welcome esteemed national ocean and climate advocate, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, as the event’s keynote speaker. N’West Iowa Editor Ty Rushing will moderate a discussion with Dr. Johnson, who will talk about Iowa’s role in climate issues, how Iowa intersects with her marine work, and discuss her soon-to-be published book: All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis. Attendees at select ticket levels will receive the book as part of their ticket package.

“The book includes pieces authored by a number of women fighting the climate crisis that I’ve drawn inspiration from recently,” says IEC Energy Program Director Kerri Johannsen.

“I’m excited to hear more about Dr. Johnson’s work and see how it inspires lively conversation by energy leaders across Iowa. Everything is connected – what we do here in Iowa impacts other parts of our planet. That includes our leadership in renewable energy and I look forward to having these conversations at Bright Ideas.” 

Dr. Johnson is a distinguished marine biologist, policy expert, and writer. She is well known for her notable work co-creating the Blue New Deal, a compelling roadmap for including oceans in climate policy. She’s been a pivotal voice in elevating climate, ocean conservation, and environmental justice issues through recent editorials in TIME Magazine and Washington Post

Programming will also feature small group conversations and networking utilizing virtual breakout rooms for guests to discuss Iowa’s future as a clean energy state. The event will conclude with an awards presentation, honoring Iowa businesses and individuals embracing clean energy priorities in their daily work. Award winners will be announced a future date.
