In broad-brush, Livestock on the Land developed by Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), is a story about regenerative grazing and its promise for the Iowa landscape. Up close, however, it’s a story about people – the farmers driven by love of family, land and livestock to seek more resilient solutions, and the community that emerges when livestock are on the land.
The film goes beyond the science to show how livestock are central threads connecting people, diversifying farms, protecting soil and water, and anchoring rural communities.
When livestock leave, so do the people. Livestock on the Land shows the reverse: how livestock can re-people our rural communities by giving farmers a chance to get started, grow businesses, provide for their families, work together and bring back the next generation to
sustain the cycle.
We leave them alone and only if we leave them alone, they can thrive more than we have a chance to see. But "they can only get very old in a community." And humans have been breaking up their communities since they discovered that wood could be used for fire and
buildings.
Since being released at our conference in 2021, Livestock on the Land has been selected and won awards at film festivals across Iowa and the Midwest.
Des Moines Water Works Park DocuSERIES is a series of educational programming delivered throughout Sepetember in the midst of the natural resource and recreational landscape many of these films inspire. Hosting this series and the panel discussions allows us to create a dialogue on the importance of water and land stewardship, health and wellness, and encourage an appreciation for the Des Moines Water Works Park. These free, family-friendly, educational events will also feature food trucks, a beer garden,
and free popcorn. All programming will take place on the Hubbell Celebration lawn on the Killinger Family Stage. We hope to see you + your family at the park!
