Held each spring and fall, the Polk County Water Monitoring Snapshot, is a fantastic opportunity to help advance clean water efforts in Iowa. This fall’s event will be held on Tues., Oct. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the Des Moines Izaak Walton League at 4343 George Flagg Parkway in Des Moines, before heading out in teams of two to four people to collect water samples from approximately 70 sites at small streams, ponds and lakes throughout Polk County. Sampling kits and monitoring instructions will be provided along with a brief training session.

Event partners include the Iowa Environmental Council, City of Johnston, City of Pleasant Hill, City of Clive, and City of Ankeny, Des Moines Parks and Recreation, Des Moines Water Works, DNR IOWATER program, Izaak Walton League, Polk County Conservation and the Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The three main goals of the project are: 1. Involve the public and engage trained volunteer water monitors in Polk Co. 2. Document water quality in our urban areas and ID problem areas 3. Evaluate nutrient impacts to water from lawns, gardens, golf courses, etc.]

No prior training is required, but individuals trained in the IOWATER volunteer monitoring program are especially encouraged to participate.
