Annual Gulf Hypoxia Task Force meeting short on results

The Gulf Hypoxia Task Force held an annual meeting this week to review and update progress on the 12-state initiative to reduce nutrient (fertilizer) pollution. IEC participated in the meeting virtually, and shares recommendations and observations from the task force gathering.

IEC Launches Iowa Energy & Infrastructure Funding Hub

IEC has launched the Iowa Energy & Infrastructure Funding Hub, an online resource hosted at IAFederalFunding.org to help Iowans better understand and access federal support for clean energy and resiliency projects. Iowa's communities, businesses, nonprofits, and individuals can utilize programs funded by the Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act legislation. These federal investments will expand local projects and priorities intended to improve Iowa's resiliency.

The new fundraising event brought together artists inspired by climate and environmental concerns with businesses and individuals supporting work to address these issues in Iowa.

IEC and environmental groups call on IUB to make MidAmerican info public

On November 3, ELPC, IEC, and Sierra Club filed an objection to MidAmerican's attempt to hide studies of its electricity generating facilities from public view. The groups argue that public deserves to see relevant studies that would shed light on whether MidAmerican's proposed a $4 billion investment is reasonable compared to alternatives. MidAmerican continues to aggressively attempt to maintain secrecy of the studies.

IEC and coalition partners respond to DNR's draft CAFO rules

A coalition of environmental organizations filed official comments with the DNR today requesting DNR lower the allowable rates of manure applied to crops, increase protections for karst terrain, close loopholes that evade regulatory oversight, and retain the ability to stop high-risk facilities.

Diving Into Manure Management

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released proposed revisions to rules regulating animal feeding operations and livestock manure. IEC reviewed the draft rules in depth to prepare formal comments in response and found that DNR has not proposed to do enough to protect Iowa's surface water or groundwater and offers. CAFO regulations - Details make a difference when it comes to siting

IEC petitioned for revisions to animal feeding operation (AFO) siting rules last year, but the Environmental Protection Commission denied the request in part because DNR promised to initiate a more comprehensive rulemaking in 2022. DNR has released proposed updates to the state's AFO rules, with mostly tweaks. But Iowa's dismal water quality needs more than tweaks.
