IEC and 12 environmental groups petition EPA to protect drinking water for Iowans

Today, the Iowa Environmental Council and numerous environmental and public health partners petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to take action to protect Iowans from unsafe drinking water. The petition calls for immediate action under the Safe Drinking Water Act to remediate nitrate contamination in Northeast Iowa drinking water sources.

New report reveals true costs of CAFOs in Iowa

IEC and ELPC Oppose MidAmerican Plan to Dump Toxins in Missouri River

Environmental groups submitted comments to MidAmerican Energy opposing a plan for the utility to dump toxic coal ash leachate into the Missouri River. The leachate, runoff that collects at the bottom of the site's coal ash landfill, contains dozens of toxic pollutants, including mercury, lead, arsenic, cyanide, and other toxic heavy metals.

IEC calls for action to reduce nutrient pollution

The Iowa Environmental Council released a report calling on state agencies to take action after nearly ten years without progress under the state's Nutrient Reduction Strategy (NRS). The report, The Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy: Ten Years and No Progress, calls for a timeline and changes in policy to achieve the state's pollution reduction goals.

"Clean Up MidAm" Campaign Holds MidAmerican Energy Accountable

A coalition of organizations and concerned Iowans have launched the “Clean Up MidAm” campaign to hold MidAmerican Energy accountable, asking for a public plan to close its Iowa coal plants by 2030. While MidAmerican Energy advertises a 100% renewable energy vision, it runs one of the largest coal fleets in the country, and is the single largest carbon polluter in Iowa.

EPC denies IEC, ELPC water quality petition

The Iowa Environmental Protection Commission today denied a petition for rules filed by the Iowa Environmental Council (IEC) and Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC) last year, ending a six-month review of the request to protect drinking water from feedlots. Instead, the Iowa DNR announced at the hearing that it intends to address the questions raised in the petition as part of a broader rulemaking process on siting issues.

NRS is not 'makin' progress' on the Raccoon River

Last week, Iowa's Raccoon River landed at #9 on America's Most Endangered Rivers list for 2021. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig dismissed the alarm of many Iowans, calling the list “propaganda” and saying the report was ‘not rooted in fact.' But data on the river is proof this waterbody is indeed threatened and the NRS is what is not rooted in fact.
