After months of uncertainty, schedule for Agency rules review released

The Reynolds Administration recently released the schedule for state agencies, boards, and commissions, including the Iowa DNR, to review rules in their respective sections of Iowa Administrative Code. Executive Order 10 placed a moratorium on any new rulemaking as part of the Governor's larger government reorganization plan, which impacted the draft AFO siting rules IEC had been advocating for.

IEC and ELPC Call for DNR to Protect Floodplains from CAFO Pollution

The Iowa Environmental Council (IEC) and Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC) filed a petition for rulemaking with the Iowa DNR's Environmental Protection Commission, seeking to adopt a floodplain map into state law. Since 2002, Iowa law has prohibited the development or expansion of CAFOs in the 100-year floodplain, but no floodplain map has been adopted, forcing the DNR to expend additional resources on siting requests.

Water and Land Legacy Bonds on the Ballot in 2021

There are important local issues on the ballot on November 2nd. In Polk and Dubuque counties, one issue is a countywide referendum on local Water and Land Legacy (WLL) bonds. Funding for natural resources and recreation consistently receive support in polls and at the ballot box. This support shows the value Iowans place on water quality and conservation efforts.
