Broad Support for Des Moines 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Resolution

DES MOINES -- 100% DSM, a local movement launched this fall to get the state’s largest city to commit to a path towards 100% carbon-free energy, is building support from hundreds of individuals, businesses, and organizations in the community as their work moves forward with city leaders.  

The proposed resolution calls for the City of Des Moines to adopt a community-wide 24/7 carbon-free electricity goal by 2030. This would extend beyond the City’s existing climate commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 28% by 2025.  

The grassroots project – spearheaded by 100% Iowa and the Iowa Beyond Coal campaign – represents a broad coalition of residents, businesses, and organizations across the City of Des Moines. To date, more than 600 Des Moines residents have signed a letter in support of the resolution, which has been delivered to the City Council; along with a letter from the following local businesses and organizations:

Des Moines City Council Member Josh Mandelbaum introduced the proposal during the October 19 City Council meeting and a work session has been scheduled for Monday, December 7 at 7:30 AM to further discuss the resolution’s objectives. Once the resolution is finalized, it is expected to be presented for consideration by the City Council in late December. 

“We appreciate the Des Moines City Council recognizing the role local government can play in the clean energy transition and taking leadership at the city-level,” said Jordan Oster, 100% Iowa Team Lead and Energy Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator with the Iowa Environmental Council. “More than 160 cities across the US have already committed to 100% renewable electricity community-wide, and we’re looking forward to Des Moines being next.”
