IUB to study utility ratemaking process, make recommendations

This week, the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) kicked off the first of three public input and discussion sessions to review state laws related to how utilities set their rates. These sessions will wrap up in early November and will result in a set of legislative recommendations to be considered in the 2024 legislative session.

Iowa Tops Previous High to Reach an Impressive 64% Wind Energy Generation Milestone

Iowa celebrates a major renewable energy accomplishment as it surpassed 64% wind energy generation in 2022, according to the latest figure from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This tops the previous record high of 59.6% in 2020, which represented a sharp increase from 42% in 2019.

IUB's ruling on Wind PRIME protects customers from risk

The Iowa Utilities Board issued an order on April 27 setting conditions for MidAmerican Energy's ability to move forward with its Wind PRIME project. The Board approved the project but found that MidAmerican should bear the risk of the $3.9 billion project underperforming and placed strict conditions on the utility's right to recover the project costs from customers.

On January 19, the Iowa Utilities Board issued an order in MidAmerican Energy's Wind PRIME proceeding to make public two generation planning studies MidAmerican has aggressively and repeatedly sought to keep secret from regulators and the public. The studies include an evaluation of the economics of MidAmerican's coal generating facilities and the a study of pathways to achieve zero carbon emissions electricity.

IEC's 2021 Condition of the State: The True Cost of Coal-Fired Power Generation in Iowa

IEC has released the 2021 Iowa Electric Generation, Condition of the State report, which analyzes fossil-fueled generation compared to renewable generation, as well as risks posed by the state's current energy generation mix that continues to rely on fossil-fueled generation. The report also explains the fallacy of utility claims of providing 100% clean energy to their customers.
