A look back at 2022 and at the year ahead

It's been an exciting year at the Iowa Environmental Council, with exciting work throughout the state on a range of clean energy, clean water, and environmental justice efforts. Learn more about some of this work and how you can get involved.

  • Clean Up MidAmWe launched the Clean Up MidAm campaign, convening a coalition of environmental partners calling for the state’s largest climate polluter to close its six coal plants still operating in Iowa.
  • We supported citizens and city leaders in both Waterloo and Windsor Heights in their efforts in getting their communities to make commitments to 24/7 carbon free electricity.
  • We petitioned the DNR to review its CAFO rules, pulling together a diverse group of partners to submit detailed comments to protect drinking water sources and protect Iowa’s rivers and lakes from manure.
  • Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy: Ten Years and No ProgressWe issued a review of Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy as it approaches ten years, making recommendations to improve the NRS, as it has yielded no progress toward cleaner water in Iowa.
  • We celebrated historic federal climate funding, and recently launched a new website providing resources and information to ensure Iowans benefit from these programs.
  • In an ongoing partnership with Drake Community Press, we are collecting stories of environmental justice in Iowa for a publication, part of work to build a more diverse, inclusive movement.

All of this, and more, is possible because thousands of Iowans get involved and contribute financial support.

We’ve got big plans for the year ahead, leading our powerful coalition in more legal, legislative, and local advocacy, along with our growing work of corporate accountability. We hope you'll join in our efforts and be a part of creating a just, healthy environment and a sustainable future for all Iowans.
